Well, we stepped back from the brink last night, although I feel like we only just did it. I'm glad the Liberals won, especially considering how bad things looked for them just a few months ago, but the results are hardly the rejection of Polievere's brand of Trump-aligned conservatism that I had hoped we would see. It looks like a lot of the Liberal votes from 2021 election probably went Conservative, but were made up for by NDP and BQ voters voting strategically out of fear of a Conservative government. The fact that the Conservatives gained support despite everything that's going on right now is pretty concerning.
And it's really a shame to see the NDP lose so many seats as a result of that shift. I think it's really important to have them as an actual progressive voice in Parliament, and they were able to push through some important bills over the last few years by holding the balance of power. It looks like they will still have enough seats to do that again, but I have a feeling their influence will be somewhat diminished compared to what it was.
I hope NDP support will return in the next election, but unless the Carney has an amazing term that wins back a bunch of voters, that would probably mean we end up a Conservative government.
We really need electoral reform, but I can't see that being on Carney's agenda.
