Despite the government announcing some extra $$ for CSIRO in the budget, it looks like planned cuts are going ahead. Worryingly, it looks like this will affect the maintenance and development of the ACCESS model - Australia's own earth system model, and the model we use to make contributions to international climate research efforts (including IPCC reports). "Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people's ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise."
