I have a slightly different take on Trump throwing Taiwan under the bus. Trump doesn't care about Taiwan - he wants China to look as much like the US as possible. Invader, aggressive, bad. Trump wants China to look bad so the US won't look so bad.
Xi is not going to take the bait.
