@foxy@blahaj.zone @OrvarLog@mathstodon.xyz In Sweden, since about 20-30 years, a university accepting a PhD student has to ensure that the student has adequate means of support during the nominal period of study (4 years). This is normally ensured through employment at the university, but can be e.g. employment at a company or by showing that the student has the means themselves. This was mainly to increase the percentage of PhD students that completed their studies, but has also made the number of PhD positions fewer.
