@waeiski@vis.social Among my many roles was IT rep and general trouble shooter and sorter out of disasters. I would always strongly advocate robust backup strategies for data which included NOT relying on external drives or systems like DropBox. This #AI enshitification is going to push people back to using unreliable systems. Recall a research group that nearly lost many years of data in a bizarre Dropbox client meltdown that wiped the data from the store and any computers that connected to it. Luckily the group contacted a member who had not logged in and got them to remove the ethernet cable before login. They managed to rescue most of their data from that machine which had cached it locally. Don't know exactly what happened to the system, but it scared them off using it again
