Because it's his to destroy. Does that hurt him, in the end? Yes. But the ego threat it represents when independent is too much for him to cope with. And he is ultimately insulated from any material harms -- he's still rich, and now you have no Twitter.
The billionaires have to live on earth too, you say? They would rather destroy it for everyone else rather than cede control, even to people better qualified or equipped.

@reneestephen@mastodon.social This is something I don't think enough people appreciate. Kim Jong Un is perfectly happy being a zillionaire ruler of starving people. They don't care how bad things get as long as they're on top of what's left.
