"I don't think communities federate" - yes, they do. They can be followed from Mastodon. You can reply to posts from here, and liking a post registers as an upvote, but otherwise you're better off using the Lemmy front-end.

@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social What I meant is i don't think posting on thinkpads@lemmy.world will interact with thinkpads@lemmy.zip. The instances themselves do federate, yes. @profoundlynerdy@bitbang.social
