This passage from Eleanor Arnason’s Ring of Swords (1993) seems remarkably apt in this moment: “I brought the computer,” Nicholas said. “It’s not a new model. We take what we can get. But the software is friendly. In my opinion it’s a little too friendly. I like more emotional distance in my software.”
