@nerdnz@cloudisland.nz Sure. I think this is not ideal (for the reasons mentioned). Mostly wanted to mention it so people are aware of that issue that comes with this route.
And even if you don't have to spell out the deadname in the .mailmap file itself, it provides a hint for people to dig.

@benbe@social.chaotikum.org Yep, it's a definite downside. I'm hoping it will be pretty rare that people look at this file, at least, and in my case it's for a closed source project, but that won't be true for everyone in a similar position
