@Ivor@mstdn.social my grandfather had a succesful company creating the iron ropes for such ropeways in Sweden, the last one was removed a couple years ago

@kofzmann@toots.nu interesting, they're not used much now, with modern plant. If the land was less steep, they would have put in a railway as the preferred method of moving ore. There wasn't even a road up to the mines until the 1960s, when a huge reservoir was built across the head of the river Tees and that flooded the mines. Although I think they were becoming uneconomic before then.
