You definitely have to know your own particular instance's rules. They can vary a LOT.
Personally I love supporting small businesses but the thing to remember, from what I can tell here, is, just dropping an ad or photo w/o interacting, without using hashtags, without following others won't get small sellers anywhere. It's a very interactive site, & so many on, say for instance Instagram, got in the habit of posting but never interacting. And that just won't work here. So some may find that it's not the strongest place to advertise, but then again I've seen people say click thru rate is great compared to Twit.

Other social media sites have one algorithm to manipulate for success. Mastodon and other types of federated servers do not work as uniformly. You have to actively interact with people. There are artists that have been on here since before the Twitter migration and I do not remember any drama around them.
