Addendum: What I find interesting in this context (and which actually triggered me writing the OP), was that we now have "fantasy UI creation" as actual business model/purpose. I think this growing dichotomy between these aspirational (often just purely visually engaging, but otherwise non-functional) UI designs and philosophies versus how tech companies are actually treating/designing for users in reality... It is just so very symbolic of our times... The dream that technology will empower us, free us, save us, is being sold to us over and over and over again, this time with AI: That AI will "lift all boats", that it will improve our health, education and bring balance to the world. In reality the big players in tech are ALL actively investing and pushing towards the polar opposites of all these things: Total control. UI design approaches are very small details in this larger picture, but they do clearly represent the shift in attitude towards increasing authoritarianism and the erosion of personal agency & control over the medium (and capability) of computation we've all come accustomed to...
