@chrisamaphone@hci.social tried to think of examples where you can negate pragmatics to decipher semantics and they’re all language-barrier romcom bits.
(Alice and Bob are mutually unintelligible. Alice makes a fool of herself to attract the attention of Bob. Bob laughs and says to Alice, “You dumbass.”)

@cdrichards@mathstodon.xyz @chrisamaphone@hci.social one of the things I quite like about 10 Things I Hate About You is there aren't really any incidents of this between the main couple - they probably would've never noticed each other without the plot happening, but that's because neither of them is actively looking (in fact all the other guys come closer to it talking to each other)
