@lapis@elekk.xyz it was always my goal that shows would be monetized by premium subscribers mainly, and then free listeners would get a few high quality ads. This way, a show could afford to build their audience, and creatives could make a living doing this.
I was moderately successful at this up until right before Covid. Podcast ads were selling for easily 10-20x YouTube ads.
Now the value is in the toilet, and the volume of ads increased to compensate. I think because of consolidation in the industry.

@lapis@elekk.xyz enshittification in general also means that many shows are just garbage used to shovel ads at you now. This is also the case on YouTube. So if you’re a good show, you probably know all this, and if you can afford to, you just stop having ads
