You can't really live with one foot in a capitalist society and one in a not-for-profit one. The strains of the two will constantly push and pull, and, like it or not, the capitalist part controls if you eat and have a roof over your head for most of us.

The Blender community has been smugly not having a 'kit fee' for a LONG time now...and yes, that has allowed hobbyists to thrive....but the cost has been to long-term support for professionals. Looks like it's moving to a more 'established' system for add-ons, and that's probably ultimately good.
