@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems Like, I have a fairly developed intellectual life online: people read my stuff, working academics have even cited it in papers occasionally, people think I'm clever and all of that. Meanwhile back where I live and breathe, life is a real struggle and I kinda scrape by on whatever income I can pull together and people in the industry here think that I'm weird and a bit stupid. Neither side can really perceive the other.

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems Like, the people who see the side of me that scrapes by simply can't credit the fact that I can actually think and write well enough that people read my work and find it useful: it just can't be true that this slightly pathetic-looking waif is considered intellectually credible internationally. Meanwhile, a lot of the people who engage through my work can't seem to perceive that I struggle: I'm so smart, after all, surely I'm doing OK?
