@iris_meredith@mastodon.social To use an example from the trans community, it's very, very common for trans people to have strongly held wank-statements as to what we are and why that makes us valid members of our gender [...] a related one that I was mulling over just this morning (and still am) is the idea that "transitioning will necessarily make you happier". it didn't make me less happy (mainly, i did it because lying to people about what my name and gender is was getting inconvenient and high-friction), but not more either, and i talked to people who ended up worse off in terms of both happiness and safety. they don't tend to have any space in the usual trans circles, but... even i don't really feel like i do, despite being only in a slightly heterodox position
