@azaliz@eldritch.cafe 100%. It's like a time travel device, almost, envisioning oneself growing old into that world. I hadn't thought of the utopia angle but you're so right that utopian fiction takes this device in a more hopeful direction. I think Le Guin's The Day Before the Revolution achieves a similar effect despite taking place in a secondary world, because the protagonist lives through — and in her case, leads — a change from the kind of capitalist, statist crapsack world we're familiar with to a thriving worldwide anarchist/socialist movement. Aaand then fast forward in time and we get The Dispossessed, but that's another story. Literally. xD
