it used to be they'd just add papers by request, like "can you cite my papers just to increase my cited-by score?" even if they were meaningless, and everyone was in on the game. then LLMs happened and they started just straight up making up citations so the gig was up and you now get banned if you break the kayfabe that any of this means anything real.
