It was mainly a federation powerhouse that could connect with everything that moved to the point of even the federation with #Diaspora being entirely the work of the Friendica devs. It was social first and. foremost while already showing hints of the Swiss Army knife that'd later be known as #Hubzilla. Speaking of which, there are some more projects on the #Fediverse that could be mentioned under "The Fediverse beyond Mastodon". I've already mentioned the federated social jack-of-all-trades Hubzilla which is sometimes described as a "federated social content management system". #Pleroma could be mentioned as an alternative to #Mastodon for those for whom 500 characters are too few, and who still don't want to go all the way and use a heavyweight like Friendica or Hubzilla. Then there's #WriteFreely, currently the most promising federated blog engine. And, of course, #Funkwhale which is audio hosting and streaming in the Fediverse. Maybe also #Lemmy which is similar to #Reddit.
