We had a system for quality software development just like record labels had a system for making artists wildly rich. In retrospect, that depended on a technological gap. The gap has now been filled. We can't demand a return to gatekeeping any more than we can expect people to start collecting vinyl records again and... wait... OK I forgot what point I was trying to make.
