is datacenter ram really not usable on personal PC's? I figured it was the same as consumer ram but with ECC features, but I haven't gone out of my way to try and buy any.

They're using the new SOCAMM standard, which current consumer hardware can't use. It's a different physical interface. Whether it will end up coming to consumer grade motherboards... 🤷♂️
