Corporate sponsors provide the resources, be it manpower or money to pay for infrastructure and full time maintainers, so there's an implicit pressure to not piss them off out of fear they'll move their resources elsewhere. The same thing happens in academia all the time, and open source project are just as affected, though it's not quite as widely recognized as in the former case.
