Contemplating a new studio vocal recording mic exclusively for singing. I’ve got an SM58 and mostly use an old Apex 550 FET condenser mic for vocals. I’m looking at the Universal Audio SD-1 dynamic mic. Anyone tried this mic before? I’ve watched a whack of vid reviews and it sounds pretty good. My budget is around $350 CAD. #music #gearsquad

@strayhorse@c.im I’ve got this mic! I got it from Long & McQuade a few years ago. It’s OK! It’s kind of UA’s version of the Shure SM7b, so it’s sort of a broadcasty/podcast close-talking mic. I’ve used it on some voiceover stuff and under snares. I grabbed a desk-boom stand thing so I always have it beside me if I get vocal ideas, so I don’t have to set up a mic stand. Decent mic for the money! And you can use UA mic modelling. Doesn’t sound like a large diaphragm condenser at all though, obviously.
