I went to the Aga Khan museum yesterday for the first time and I found it very inaccessible visually. Everything is in rooms so dark you have to strain your eyes and so much of the work are miniatures. So fine and small and hardly visible even if the light were good. They really need magnifiers on a string so people can properly see and appreciate what is on display especially if they aren’t going to light them better…

The way it was lit strained my eyes so much they struggled focusing after seeing only half of the museum. I’ve never had that issue before. And the way they were hung, combined with the lighting flattened the gold, stopped it glowing and only by crouching down awkwardly could you see the gold glimmer…

@JoBlakely@mastodon.social I believe there are reasons that museum exhibits aren't exposed to strong light as it can degrade them (although many in this particular museum would surely have been exposed to sunlight in hot countries!), but with modern lighting tech there's ways of reducing any UV/IR exposure.. https://www.xal.com/en/services/know-how/artwork-fading
