@MartinEscardo@mathstodon.xyz In my opinion, it is a wide-spread trust that LLMs are capable of doing proper calculations (they are not, despite various claims). This, alongside of professors (or even teachers at lower levels) being forced to allow "AI" through either regulation or frustration is forcing students of all ages being told that the computer can do it for them in some sense, whereas people born in the 1980s or earlier were forever told "there will never be a calculator in your pocket. you need to show your work." It feels like an endemic thing. I believe it started with the originally good-hearted notion that students should be able to have access to a laptop (ChromeBook). While the concept is good, learning math on something that is capable of doing all of it isn't great. Then again, if all you want to do is CS/programming, one only needs to understand the math that has to be done, not understand how to do it with pencil and paper.
