@LuigiDev@mastodon.lol @otyugh@pouet.chapril.org @eloquence@social.coop Mostly because I like abstractions, but also when the specific distribution is no relevant e.g. in a broad categorization like "What system do you use: Windows / MacOS / GNU / other". In that context, "GNU" is more generic than a long list of distributions of GNU software with a Linux kernel. I believe that correctly naming things is important to avoid ambiguities in discussions, even if most people are happy calling it "Linux" (which is OK, I do it too).

@matthieu@mastodon.weber.fi.eu.org @otyugh@pouet.chapril.org @eloquence@social.coop the thing is non-gnu Linuxes should usually be counted for "Linux" in this kind of stats, even if they don't feature GNU components

@matthieu@mastodon.weber.fi.eu.org At the end of the day I think "anything is fine" too ; our thinking is tampered by our langage - it is a fact -, but langage is also tampered by how people use it. That's how we can find slur words used with pride by people who ought to be humiliated by it. In the same way, if Libre software got mainstream as OS under the "Linux" name, it's wrong as per definition, but who cares, a win is a win, I'd be more than happy to take it.
