E.g.: https://royalsocietypublishing.org/rstb/article/376/1819/20190672/31397/Non-human-primates-use-combined-rules-when The way I think of it is that in the wild, primates, us included, are evolved to learn skills. A variable reward is in nature generally the sign of a learnable skill, like getting fruit from a tree, or honey from a hive. Or winning at poker in a friendly game. I think of industrial gambling as a narrow set of activities that feel like positive-sum learnable skills, but are actually negative sum for the player.
