@meena@cathode.church also that's also not how libraries work -- people rip CDs/DVDs and scan books from libraries all the time, and we don't stop them nor do we police that

@vickyrampin@digipres.club yes but it's got nothing on the scale that LLM crawlers are operating on or the scale on which LLM bots are contributing (absolute garbage) back to open source projects or Wikipedia twelve people ripped CDs from the library, this week alone! vs: a swarm of bees flew the distance from the earth to the sun to fill this jar of honey now imagine this swarm having scan books and rip CDs from your library, but when they come back to return them, they also leave new books and new CDs, most of them with valid looking barcodes and NFC tags, none of which are in the system because they were created that afternoon and of course this isn't just happening at your library, but at every library and some of the branches, some over eager new employee decided to start adding these new books and CDs to the system and soon your library is more the scale at which these things are happening is incomprehensible to humans, and the computer systems we built are crumbling under the load, but the human systems that we built are failing at the same time as well
