If all I have are two shoes, one will make my feet hurt and the other will make them bleed, the choice is clear.
Of course I should get better shoes, but maybe that's not possible in the moment. Compromise is a laughable word in this situation and I agree that the US should be held accountable, but at the moment that's not possible. It doesn't matter if you think this is abhorrent or not. Change the system or accept that the lesser evil will be the better choice.

The problem is that in your metaphor, no one even considers repairing or changing the shoes. if anyone complains about the shoes that make you hurt they yell at you for promoting the shoes that make you bleed. then next year your shoes have degraded and now you have to choose between shoes that make you bleed and shoes that breal your toes. same thing, no point in fixing them, because bleeding is better than broken toes... And per your metaphor, it's better to go barefoot.
