@fitheach@mstdn.io Meanings change over time. And that’s ok. There are some symbols / signs that become tainted by their use of a nefarious group. The swastika certainly falls into this category - it was an old religious symbol whose meaning was perverted by the Nazis. The V-sign shown from the back (two fingers up, with the palm of your hand facing toward you) has a similar meaning in the UK, as in America the equivant gesture would be extending the middle finger. The origin of this was medieval archers showing that they still had their two fingers to draw their bows. As far as I know, there aren’t any nefarious uses for the V-sign.
