US politics is binary, with one blue and one red candidate (generally) competing for the votes of the full electorate, but usually each candidate is selected from a field of hopefuls by registered voters of the relevant party.
These 'primaries' are public and may be influenced by dark money or wealthy 'PACs' funded by the opposing party, that seek the choice of candidate the opposing party would prefer to face in the later general election.
There's too much money in US politics.
