speaking of all this thing, Japan posting, I'm once again reminded of a really interesting bit of computer history that hardly anyone knows about: Japan almost conquered the desktop computing space in the 80s before Microsoft and the only reason this didn't happen is because Microsoft, Apple, and the US govt as a whole sneeded so hard about getting beaten fair and square in a free market that they threatened trade protectionism
