@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza With the New 3DS, an infrared LED is set into the top bezel next to the camera. It shines on your face if you have 3D switched on, and the camera tracks the infrared reflections from your eyes. The system uses that to determine your eyes' positions, and can make adjustments to the screen to compensate for head movement. It updates very quickly, so you can tilt your head or the 3DS and it won't interrupt the 3D effect at all.

@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza I can play Mario Kart 7 in first-person mode and using the gyroscopic steering, and 3D works well. Also, that's the most impressive and terrifying Mario Kart experience.

@GamesMissed@mastodon.social @Hundstrasse@retro.pizza is the infrared light obvious to the user? I've only ever played an OG 2DS and the user-facing blue power LED is ridiculously obnoxious if you play in the dark to the point that I covered it with tape. Always wanted to try playing a 3DS with 3D, but I've never actually seen one in real life.
