@miblo@mas.to @rauschma@fosstodon.org @geertaarts@mastodon.green Yeah it’s basically got one end with a sticker saying “Inbox Zero people, this is you”
But we’re all different people — I see the entire merit of people’s argument for chronological timeline, but I don’t want to go back to my Twitter addiction — that’s a time sink for 30s energy I no longer have
But equally — and this statement may age poorly — YouTube has a really nice algorithm (and nice content makers). It may be my dedication to the “Fewer Like This” button and “Never Recommend This Channel” button, and I’m also very frugal with the Like button. It’s public, unlike a Favourites list.
But YouTube’s present success with opaque algorithms might be more to do with the higher bar to clear, to publish a video. It’s one thing to post “garbage” in comments, whether human or bot, and be abusive and not address arguments; doing that in a video doesn’t happen as easily — a video has to be ABOUT something. Even TikTok.
And video is, more or less, slow enough to “create”, to break the positive feedback loop of tit-for-tat that devalues all textual posts & reposts & quote-posts & replies — possibly, that’s the key to Instagram being a better format than Facebook. The tsunami of video-form slop has already started but the flood defences only need to scale linearly; video has to scale volumetrically.

@miblo@mas.to @rauschma@fosstodon.org @geertaarts@mastodon.green I concede — the “reaction” genre is the reply bait hydraulic pressure rising again (Are podcasts a form of media highly immune to reply bait? Uniquely mono-tasking, at least for cognitive functions)
