@DanielMReck@mas.to I would suggest that there is another reason for things getting longer and longer.... Shakespeare was able to express complex stories with significant character development, in about two hours (or shorter - consider MacBeth). My sense is that modern directors may have not had adequate exposure to (or understanding of) classic theatre or literature (or of the biological needs of older movie goers.) Consider this opening sentence from the Bridge of San Luis Rey: ON Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714, the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipitated five travellers into the gulf below. Modern film/tv makers would waste fifteen minutes of video to express this. Compare that to Frank Capra's five minutes of leaving Shangri La in his 1937 film of Hilton's Lost Horizon or the opening or the opening death/Rosebud scene in Citizen Kane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0fXiuzPbaw The musical Hamilton isn't short, but it covers an entire complex lifetime in less than three hours.
