when i was a kid if you showed any deviance from the norm you were said to be "going through a phase" caught playing with dolls and other inappropriately feminine toys? don't worry, he's just "going through a phase" girl down the street that's a bit too good at sports and likes to roughhouse with the boys? she's also just "going through a phase" we were all "going through phases" and the message was loud and clear. these feelings and desires you have are so invalid we're not going to discuss then or acknowledge them as real in any way
