"When #EssexUniversity’s #Southend campus opened [in 2008], it was a message of hope for a ‘left behind’ #UK seaside town. Its closure [next academic year, which was announced in December,] will be felt far beyond its 800 #students, some of whom will not get their degrees" as they are unable to relocate or commute.

@cyclotopie@mastodon.gougere.fr I live on the Suffolk/Essex border, and can confirm that Colchester and Southend are quite a distance away, and whether you get the train or drive it is not a pleasant journey (Essex is also a very car-dependent area)
