Maybe because this movie was designed in a lab to be as safe and non-threatening, aka mainstream as possible ; appealing only to a sense of nostalgia for a celebrity rather than actually telling the story of who that man was ?
Yes, whitewashing sells. THAT'S WHY THINGS ARE WHITEWASHED.
