A lady on the bus made me pick my LL Bean tote bag off the floor because the floor was dirty. I did not understand at first and another lady had to explain it to me. “I grew up with these things,” I said. “They’re for carrying firewood or tools.” But I picked the bag up and put it my lap to be polite. I am an atavism.
