Firstly the area was never homogeneous, and the groups Zionists see as problems were named as problems even in the Old Testament. Secondly the area had a native Jewish population that never emigrated. It's well-known base reason for the current problem that the freshly landed Zionists categorised themselves as "white", unlike those who stayed.

To not go into details there exist a lot of people in "the West" who think that what Nazis did was unthinkable not due to the acts being immoral, but because they happened in Europe. (And indeed, many of the Western powers have, before and after WW2, commited things that are very close to what Nazis did categorically, but they didn't do it in Europe, so it's ok. And as I'm sure you're aware: Middle-East isn't Europe.)
