Fruitful or scorched earth? The accounts of the talks provided by the Chinese and US governments differ considerably, suggesting that although some minor trade successes have been ‘achieved’, the two countries remain miles apart when it comes to their respective political positions. It remains to be seen whether this state visit can truly be described as leading to more fruitful cooperation between the two countries. It certainly won’t be easy.
