@techlife@indieweb.social My point about algorithms was unrelated to QTs. I just think the canned talking points about "algorithms" fail to grasp what the word actually means, plus the fact that chronological sorting isn't really value neutral like people claim. I feel Mastodon would benefit from adding another timeline sorting method, but it's impossible to start that conversation if everyone is just going, "Meep, meep! Algorithm bad!" ๐Ÿ˜†

    @donnodubus@mas.to okay, got ya. ๐Ÿ™‚ I guess the key is that "algorithms" are the big bad, because 1. people don't know what's in them and 2. they have no choice in which algorithms they are subject to. Simple sort and filter criteria yes, are algorithms, but they are also transparent, which is I guess what we want to focus on. I think we can suggest sort and filter functions without needing to bring the word algorithm into it. But yes I see what you are saying. It is useful to be clear about defintions
