Thus, I assume quoting is value-neutral, it's how you call attention to what you're replying to, for good or ill.

I do feel kind of nostalgic about >>> style discussion, which had the dis/advantage that you could quote just the relevant fragment(s) of what you were replying to, collapsing the thread context down within a single post.
