Decided to give one of the older Wizardry games a try. Not brave enough go straight for the original saga, to start in the Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, so I went with one of the games from the Renaissance era. Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls! I'm not even skin deep in this game and it's drawn me in, but my heart broke after hearing that a random lore drop connected it to the later Science-Fantasy trilogy... Oh well, ignoring that, this game is (afaik) a purely fantasy experience so it doesn't matter. I still like it. The party management and moment to moment combat is fine, and the exploration is simple enough, but the loot drops could be a bit more generous... Also, I'm a retard that keeps stepping on trapped tiles, and it took me too long to realize that the levitate spell is meant to counter that and not just bottomless chasms... I'm split between preferring the full CGI anime style of Wizardry: Variants Daphne and this one's fusion between Eastern and Western art styles.

Here's a bit more info. This game allows you to have one save for all of the available playable races, male and female each. You may want to back in and out of the character creation menu repeatedly when creating your protagonist, as the bonus stat points randomly fluctuate between 5 and maybe 40? I dunno, that's what ancient whisperings allege, but the most I ever got is 20. Anyway, after that, just like in all Wizardry games, you are free to make as many adventurers as you want to fill your party, as death is a constant and revival is not promised and still comes at a cost. You've got your standard fantasy Elves and Dwarves showing up, but my favorite race is the Not!Hobbits, the agile Porklu, who are best served working as Thieves and Ninja. Here's a pic of my protagonist, isn't she a doll?... However, by happenstance I found value in making another Porklu a Mage, and she can pop off fodder obliterating spells faster than my Asche can rob them blind... Elves are more suited to being spell casters, but I've already got another Mage who is a Gnome, so I had her be a Bishop for the ability to identify regular items from cursed ones and work healing magic... but in hindsight, a Priest would've been more efficient for healing and would've come in handy with these deadlier undead enemies I've been dealing with. Still, besides the Porklu, the hardest working adventurers I've got are the Dwarves. They're the BEST at being meatshields, and they can dish out the same punishment in turn. Sala's Trick Attack can either kill three enemies from the opposing front row in one turn or (if I'm lucky) focus fire on one tanky bastard and finish him off.
