"Youth needs its cyborg identity
tap the fingers, keys,
the mouse runs
each click a heaping of coal
burned, somewhere the ice cap shudders"
He was probably the first person I related to as an adult who was a younger adult than I was. That I outlived him seems wrong.
The "cyborg identity" here is from one of his earliest English papers that used it in some continental-philosophy way.
Each click of the mouse being coal burned was a contemporaneous reference to the @bruces@mastodon.social Viridian list.

"the CRT glow imposing on the body every reality in monochrome" Just as the beginning of _Neuromancer_ refers to the sky being the color of a television tuned to a dead channel -- and that color has changed dramatically over the years -- people no longer have a CRT glow when they are typing on social media. The visual image unexpectedly is no longer a part of people's lives.
