So, suppose you are dril (or some other public figure), and both you and your followers get a lot of value out of both permanence & global searchability. Shouldn't you (as the person posting the toot) be able to opt into that?
(ephemeral & unsearchable is fine as the default.)

I really really want those toots to survive—and to be searchable—even after the original instance dies. (And maybe the fact that they wouldn't helps explain why a lot of science/engineering twitter hasn't migrated here.)
