A more mathematical discussion of this approximation can be found at the link below (part of site to help someone try learn a bit of GR). As it says there, this approximation assumes slow moving objects, which light definitely isn't! Not that this is what Einstein did in 1911. 6/9 [Originally, the link did NOT require a subscription.     Not that this is what Einstein did in 1911. He didn't have the full theory of GR at that time. He was really just relying on the "principle of equivalence".
