@siracusa@mastodon.social Thanks for that, I think I get the picture clearly now. That bridge seems to date to the 60s; too recent for culture to change. Couple that with Fire Islanders adoring their status and I doubt they'll ever drop the distinction. Ultimately, talking about the mainland is a class differentiator for the people who live on Fire Island. Life is full of those language gatekeeping codes.
