RE: https://flipboard.com/@cbcnews/calgary-s2m5l3ffz/-/a-6z7MOTYuQGO_fc57hwpkdA%3Aa%3A107108217-%2F0 Hey @OpenMediaOrg this seems like a big deal We don't need a nanny state in our communications services. We do need young people to be raised competently enough, and explained the dangers of excessive social media, of mis- and disinformation, and of jumping off bridges. We don't need a law saying no young person can walk across a bridge, or use social media. It's fine and good to tell people what they can and can't do in the classroom, but it's none of the government's business how our kids socialize on their own time. And yes, social media IS a kind of socializing. #CDNPoli #Canada

  • @datum@zeroes.ca @OpenMediaOrg@mastodon.social what you said, and: If this was to be implemented, who'd do the actual age verification? Where would this data go & be stored? Because I have a guess, and it's the opposite of digital sovereignty....

@datum@zeroes.ca @OpenMediaOrg@mastodon.social Age verification is a gateway to privacy compromise to the very entities that seek to exploit and manipulate and compromise privacy and identity https://www.eff.org/pages/age-verification-systems-are-surveillance-systems https://www.eff.org/issues/age-verification

@datum@zeroes.ca @OpenMediaOrg@mastodon.social Online the only entities that have the right to know who you are and your age is your internet service provider. The W3C verifiable credential model could be used to identify users and maintain privacy. But this would demand that politicians understand the privacy issues, the risks of their compromises and the strategies to both maintain privacy and provide identity verification without privacy compromises It’s not a simple problem with a simple solution. But it’s easy to villify https://www.w3.org/TR/vc-data-model-2.0/

  • @datum@zeroes.ca This is the grassroots of the party, and their resolutions aren't binding, though they can trickle up to actual laws. We're monitoring it closely!
